He holds out a gnarled garden-dirt encrusted hand and catches the little flier between two knuckles. A couple of grandkids, maybe five and eight, come from the house and flank him

Will you be voting, sir?
Oh, I never miss an election

I glance at the grandkids. The little girl has adorable braids twisting out every which way. Both of them are beaming beaming beaming at me. I nod and smile at each of them

Can I ask if you'll be voting Democratic?
I always vote Democratic. I've never made enough money to vote Republican

The kids have come out to talk with him not me, so I smile, thank them all, and move on down the block
