It occurs to me that many of you may be feeling … giddy. Strange. Light, as though made of air. Oddly carefree. Unexpectedly awesome. A little tingly in the ganglia. Euphoric, almost. Don't see your shrink: you don't need therapy. Stay away from the medicine cabinet (or wherever you get your fix); you don't need a drug. This is feeling of a side effect of a process we proles like to call doing the right thing. It's no coincidence that it happened after you repealed Don't Ask Don't Tell. It...

The problem was framed rather well by NPR when they expressed, over his firing, that his statements compromised his credibility as a news analyst. I realize that people have biases. I do, we all do. But to expect me to trust Juan Williams as an analyst with insight is a bit much now that I know that he doesn't have the brains or the maturity not to start soiling his britches whenever he sees someone in "Muslim dress". And "Muslim dress"? Whatever the hell is that supposed to be? There are some...

(NB1: Seen elsewhere, passed along to me. I'm forwarding this: don't break the chain! NB2: MMORPG-based humor. A "debuff" is any action that negatively affects another character.) US Democracy Server: Patch Day Version 44.0 President * Leadership: Will now scale properly to national crises. Intelligence was not being properly applied. * A bug has been fixed that allowed the President to ignore the effects of debuffs applied by the Legislative classes. * Drain Treasury: There appears to be a b...

Jeff Merkley lives in my neighborhood. I learned this by accident. One day a few weeks ago, while me and my wife were leaving to do something necessary, we crossed paths with a pleasant woman who was out for a run with her dog. This woman turned out to be Jeff's wife, Mary, and she had taken the initiative to stop just to thank us for having a Jeff Merkley for Senate lawn sign up. There we were, quite unexpectedly, talking with the wife of the man who was going to, we at the time hoped (and no...

I have a cow-orker, name of Mary. She's loudly, proudly liberal ... and as a personality, comes on a little strong a-times. But I have no complaints about her. Here's why. We have more than a couple of cow-orkers I think of as "Jeebus-addicts". One of them never strays far from his Bible; it follows him as though here were Linus and it were his security blanket. After telling someone else in the company (in a different department) he voted McCain, he was called a racist (a viewpoint I do not...

Just, out of an instinct for self-abuse no doubt, took a minute out to check on the FUD being cycled about on Free Republic. I'm used to the idea of WATBs over there crying because sane people don't love them, but here's something I didn't realize: DU's apparently too tough for Freepers to use. Take it away, BlueStateBlues: Thank God for FR. I went to Dem.underground and a couple of other sites to read their threads, looked for their threads, found them but couldn't figure out how to read the...

One thing that will never fail to boggle me is the outpouring of kind words for someone who died, even if they did most people no good at all. I am not a fan of Tim Russert, and I never was. I don't wish further depression and despair upon his loved ones ... I've lost family members too. I know how that's like the world ending on you. Because, it kind of is. But for some reason, speaking up about what this man's worth was is considered evil and "dancing on his grave". Well, step back. I'm go...

I mean, what's the matter? When being useful idiots for republicans got you into power you had no problems with it. You know, I've drifted away from even calling myself Christian anymore. What's the point? The church these days is no more than an interested power bloc, looking to take over the country for their own, rolling over every vulnerable person that gets in its way, and finding poor, gay, and non-Christian people to destroy as scapegoats. Seriously, I don't understand why more people s...

But that's not to say you don't have a point there. Well said, the entire thing. Nice use of illustrations too! Reading this article made me think so much about how conservatives are so amoral about playing on meanings of words and marketing. Now, I don't necessarily begrudge marketing in general. The breaking of innocence being the beginning of wisdom, one of my points of departure is one truism that personal experience girds for me: people are malleable. We can be influenced. The doubts of ev...

I just finished listening to Portland's Own Thom Hartmann who was talking about the "President for Life" group–Family Security Matters. Relevant DUers are CK4829 (which check his DU Journal...it's the third or fourth article down...and Thom mentioned DUer "Raindog" in particular. I tried linking to CK4829's journal out of this post but DU wasn't having it. He have a rocket ride around the Family Security Matters scheme and exactly what they wanted to do. He gilded no lilies; the velvet cover c...

I'm not making this post to garner admiration or attention really. But this is something I never do. I don't volunteer, I don't donate. Actually, I don't have the money, usually. Bills, Bills, Bills, Mortgage (30-year fixed at 5.875 percent-give us some credit :) ), and Bills. Trying to get a graphic design career off the ground whilst in my 40's. You know, the American runaround. I've wanted to donate to DU for the longest time. And, truth be told, I would always feel a little embarrassed...I...
